Columbia, South Carolina – Veteran educator and statewide education advocate Sylvia Wright will officially file as a candidate for South Carolina Superintendent of Education on Monday, March 16, 2026, marking a major milestone in her campaign to transform the state’s public education system.
With more than 20 years of experience in education, Wright has served as an educator and Leadership Coordinator and has built a reputation as a dedicated champion for students, teachers, and families. Her career has been defined by a commitment to academic excellence, leadership development, and expanding opportunities for young people across South Carolina.
South Carolina currently ranks 43rd in the nation in education, and Wright says the state deserves bold leadership and a clear plan for improvement.
“For too long, our education system has been failing students, teachers, and families,” said Wright. “South Carolina deserves leadership that understands the classroom, respects educators, and is willing to fight for real change. I am running because our students deserve a system that prepares them to succeed, and together we can move South Carolina from the bottom of the rankings into the top ten.”
Over the past year, Wright has traveled across all 46 counties—twice—meeting with teachers, parents, students, and community leaders to hear directly about the challenges facing schools. Those conversations have shaped a campaign focused on improving literacy outcomes, supporting educators, strengthening accountability, and investing in the future of South Carolina’s students.
Wright enters the race with strong support from leaders across the state. She has been endorsed by March On PAC and backed by 25 elected officials, community leaders, activists, and educators, including former South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson.
Her campaign centers on restoring confidence in the state’s education system and building a future where every child in South Carolina has access to high-quality public education.
“Sylvia Wright represents the leadership South Carolina’s education system needs,” said campaign officials. “She understands the challenges because she has lived them in the classroom and in the community.”
Wright’s filing will take place in Columbia on Monday, March 16, 2026, as she formally enters the race to lead the state’s education system and bring forward a new vision for students across South Carolina.
